They also assist in peer review, identify potential authors and topics for special issues, and promote the journal. Essentially, they act as ambassadors for the journal, helping to enhance its quality and reputation.
Key Functions of an Editorial Board:
- Peer Review: They handle submitted manuscripts, either directly or through assigning reviewers, and provide feedback to authors.

Editor-in-Chief
An editor-in-chief is the top-level editor of a publication, responsible for the overall content, direction, and quality of the publication. They oversee all aspects of the editorial process, including managing staff, delegating tasks, and making final decisions on content. In essence, they are the leader of the editorial team and the face of the publication.
An editor-in-chief, nominated by the president and confirmed by the board of directors. Each editor-in-chief serves a three-year term and may be reappointed for a second term. These persons have overall responsibility for all publications of the respective societies.
Responsibilities:

Editorial Manager
Editorial Managers play a pivotal role in shaping the voice and direction of content within a publication or organization. They oversee the editorial process from concept to publication, ensuring that content aligns with the organization's standards, goals, and audience expectations.
The journal editor, who serves as chair of the journal’s editorial board, is nominated by the president of the university and confirmed by the board of directors. The editor serves for a three-year term and may be reappointed for a second term. The editor is responsible for the overall quality of the journal’s content and implements policy decisions approved by the board of directors. The editor and editorial board oversee procedures for manuscript submission, acceptance, rejection, and publication, as well as the criteria for review and referee of papers. The editor delegates editorial duties to other members of the editorial board and takes an active part in defining the journal’s aims, scope, policies, and editorial coverage. The editor prepares an annual report for the president of the university describing the journal status and recommendations for changes.
Technical Editors
- Technical editors are nominated by the journal editor and appointed by the editor-in-chief on behalf of the president(s). As with the duties of editor, the duties of technical editors vary from journal to journal. Some journals have no technical editors.
- Most technical editors are responsible for rejecting manuscripts, and some also hold the authority to approve manuscripts for publication. The technical editor serves for a three-year term and may be reappointed for a second term.
- Technical editors work under the direction of the journal editor and are responsible for the technical and intellectual content of the journal in their assigned areas. They direct the work of associate editors in reviewing and evaluating the manuscripts submitted to the journal.
- Technical editors maintain the overall responsibility for determining that in-depth and timely reviews are obtained from knowledgeable scientists. Technical editors also are responsible for taking an active interest in assisting the editor to define the journal’s aims, policies, and editorial coverage and in recruiting members for the editorial board.
International Advisory
An International Advisory Board (IAB) for a journal is a group of external experts who advise on the journal's strategic direction and help ensure its international relevance and quality. They may provide second opinions on manuscripts, promote the journal, and suggest topics for future issues.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
- Strategic Advice: IAB members provide guidance on the journal's long-term vision and objectives, helping the editorial board to stay aligned with evolving trends and research priorities.
- Manuscript Review: They may be asked to review manuscripts, especially when disagreements arise among regular reviewers or to ensure a broader perspective on submissions.
